Vinter专辑介绍
Earlier this year, I listened to Six Feet Under’s latest album, ‘Unborn’. Surprisingly, I ended up enjoying the album more than I had expected to. The sole reason for me enjoying an album by a band which I had always thought to be mediocre, was the guitar work of Ola Englund. After that, I had made myself a mental note, to check out more of Mr.Englund’s work. Recently, a band called Feared was brought to my attention, which incidentally, turns out to Ola Englund’s side project. Needless to say, I pounced upon the chance to review their latest upcoming album.
Feared has been very active over the past three years, much more than any other band in today’s age. Starting from 2010, till date, the band has released four full length records. Their fifth album, titled ‘Vinter’ will be their second album in 2013. Now, there were initial doubts about the quality of the music considering that they have been releasing an album year after year. But the moment the record started playing, all doubts vanished into oblivion.
Thrash / Death Metal is a term, which is used very lightly these days to describe every other band that has influence from more than one genre. But that is not the case with Feared, as they do complete justice to the term Thrash / Death Metal. Once again, the element that takes the spotlight here, is the brilliant guitar work of Ola Englund. The riffs contain adequate amount of elements from both thrash and death genres. The sound stands with one leg in both genres, delivering a near perfect blend of heavy down tuned death metal and rapid galloping riffs of thrash metal.
The music carries a hint of melody to it, courtesy of the vocals and the guitars. This, in combination with a haunting atmosphere, makes up for a very enjoyable listen. The guitar work is nothing short of excellent, as Ola Englund’s energy filled riffs and melodic leads deliver some memorable moments track after track. The vocalist Mario Ramos has a great range in his vocal delivery, alternating between low growls, like the ones in traditional death metal and high shrieks, like the ones in melodic death metal. His voice is not too hard to decipher and that is something to be really appreciated.
The music sports many segments that has odd time signatures and the capable drumming of Kevin Talley, tackles these segments effortlessly. The bass work is something that could have been better. The bass on this album is
credited to Jocke Skog, who is the newest addition to the band’s line up. He tends to follow the rhythm of either the guitar or drums throughout the album. Now this is not bad per se, but a little innovation in bass work is always welcome. The mixing and production is done well, with enough importance given to the atmosphere. This gives the entire album a dark feel.
When a band keeps releasing albums with such short gaps between the releases, more often than not, the quality of the music takes a hit. Contrary to this observation, Feared have come up with some beautifully delivered songs. This band is on to something amazing and if they continue this trend with future releases, they will be a band to look out for.
