What We Reflect专辑介绍 Nü-metal. It’s a phrase that produces shudders from individuals in the indie scene, evoking memories of ultra-baggy bondage pants, wallet chains, Korn t-shirts, and Hot Topic sojourns. Quite simply, these kids now wish to pretend that part of their lives never happened. They have to understand, however, that there are kids out there who have not been exposed to more genuinely emotional, creative music. Perhaps a record such as Scars of Life’s latest, entitled What We Reflect, will be their gateway into more innovative metal bands. After all, there are moments that sound similar to metal favorites Atreyu, minus the Swedish influence. Although it isn’t necessarily my cup of tea, I would rather listen to a record like What We Reflect, that is unabashedly nü-metal, than some “slit my wrist” band like Hawthorne Heights, that is masquerading as “screamo” but is really just as uncreative as anything on the radio.

“Lemon” opens What We Reflect sounding like some Korn song I can’t put my finger on. Granted lyrics such as “As the seasons change within me, I’m coming around” are cheesy, but guitars are so crunchy and the chorus is so catchy it doesn’t seem to matter. The second track, “Alone Inside,” is just as infectious and features some well-placed double-bass work The idea of the chorus being more upbeat than the verses sounds simple, but it’s used very effectively here.

Not every song is as successful, though. On “Pool of Fears,” the use of fast double-bass in the slow chorus just sounds silly. “Water in My Hands” features some much needed time changes, but feels stifled when the band just won’t let it rip. And the closing track “Silent Words” sounds like a wannabe Staind song.

Granted every song on the record sounds relatively the same, and every lyric is something like “I feel so helpless and hopeless” or “I feel so goddamn hollow,” but if bands like Disturbed, Korn, and Taproot are your thing, then Scars of Life’s What We Reflect is right up your alley. Perhaps some of the more interesting moments will inspire you to give bands like SiKth or Mastodon a try. Hopefully.
