HAPPY BIRTHDAY NUCLEAR BLAST. One of my favorite metal labels is having their birthday bash this year and to celebrate it they have released this compilation of completely new material with a second disc on the way this fall. In the vain of the Roadrunner United collection (except with less artists and more less variety) Into the Light features some of Nuclear Blast's best vocalists and artists.
Written by Victor Smolski of Rage fame - Into the Light sounds a lot like a Rage album with slight variances to fit certain vocalists. So if you are a fan of Rage then this CD is going to strike home - if not, the blend of power and thrash with a slight progressive tendency might throw you. Don't worry - even though the album is very solid there is enough variety to keep new fans listening.
The guitar work is top notch. I am a firm believer that Victor is one of the best guitarists in the industry right now and his work on Into the Light proves this. There is some very progressive shred moments and some really heavy riffs but the guitars never once lose that melodic edge that still makes power metal. There are melodic lines and even some pretty thrashy songs ("Bloodsuckers" and "Terrified" are damn close to thrash as possible) too.
The drums, provided by the current Rage drummer, are well suited for the varying sounds on the album and the overall epic quality of the music. There is some great different sounds the drums incorporate into different songs all of it without sounding out of place.
My one (slight) complaint with Into the Light is the bass. The bass is a little loud for my tastes but since the bass is so well played and technical it really isn't that bad of a choice. Hell, in the song "Terrified" there is even a bass solo because the bass is so good and it's awesome.
The keyboards are also quite loud but they counteract the bass and drum parts very nicely by adding a lot of nice melodies where there normally wouldn't be any. And since the keys are just as complex as the guitar parts there is some nice playoffs with between the two.
The vocals are presented by a variety of singers in a variety of styles. Everything from thrash (Schmier) to female (Tara) to falsettos (Sammet) they are all here. Most of it is power metal in general with a few harsher vocalists thrown in. Most of the variety stems from the different vocal melodies and styles and this gives the album a great range within the sub genre. So expect a little of everything.
Overall this album is quite amazing. Very solid even with the variety in writers on the songs and the different approaches to each. It's well produced and written. Definitely for fans of Rage (it sounds a lot like Rage at times) but anyone that loves power metal is going to get a massive kick out of this.
