Well, this really damn sucks. Another major disappointment for me this year. I loved Blutaar. A lot thought it was boring and sounded like a black metal Amon Amarth, which it kind of did, at times. That's part of what makes it so good. But also, the beautiful melodies and the folkish atmosphere. Calling Wolfskult viking metal is absolutely ridiculous. I don't hear much of it at all here. The themes are somewhat present in the lyrics but IMO, that's hardly enough to warrant the viking metal tag. This is melodic black metal, verging on death metal at times (though I don't think it's quite to the point of being blackened death metal).
As for the album. It's boring as hell at some points. As much as Blutaar is catchy and has great songs (at least, IMO), this one is just drags a lot for me. There's some really good stuff, like the title track, Glorreiche Tage, the beautiful Phönix and the epic Sehnsucht (nearly 10 minutes long!) but some stuff like Schwertzeit, Naglfar and Blutdienst III is really hurting the album for me and sends it into temporary boredom. Thankfully, the good tracks make this album redeeming but it's definitely not as good as Blutaar overall and not quite up to the debut's level, either. It's just very hit-and-miss for me and I feel a little frustrated because the songs I like, I really like, as much as those on Blutaar. Sehnsucht is probably the best song of the band so far. Hopefully this grows on me but for now, I can't give this more than 3.5 stars.
