Whether or not you believe in fate a chance encounter between Rob Chapman and Rabea Massaad in a bar where Rabea was working had to be more than coincidence. This was the beginning of a beautiful relationship and the band Dorje, who established themselves in 2012 after enlisting the help of Dave Hollingworth and Ben Minal whom Rabea had previously worked with. As soon as you listen to their music you can feel how well they have gelled and how destiny must have played a part in all this. The band are set to release their second EP Catalyst on November 6th and the title couldn’t be more apt. The heavy beats and thunderous sounds are all the incentive you need to get up and rock out.
Catalyst takes off with Written, raucous guitar, pounding drums and vocals that shake you to the core yet fill you with a comfortable sensation of familiarity like your childhood “blankey”. Title track Catalyst begins on a slower tempo but still resonates the same soothing effects and magnetic charm. The introduction to Aeromancy has a Pink Floydesque feel to it though quickly gives way to a much more classic style complete with sensational guitar seduction leaving you breathless. All provides the prog side of Dorje (an eerie album title in itself) but with a predominant bass.
Final track of the EP White Dove is definitely more of an enigma and is extremely difficult to categorise. The initial burst of guitar would blend well in a 70s based rock track yet the song seems to cover several sub genres offering a more intriguing quality. Some sound comparisons could be made to Audioslave but it possesses a uniqueness which in turn breaks that connection.
Overall a pleasure to listen to.
