Four months after the classic 6/30/93 Metro show (source of the famous acoustic “Killer Cars” released as a B-side of “Pop Is Dead” as well as official live versions of “You,” “Vegetable,” “Inside My Head” and “Banana Co.”), the band returns to the scene of their triumph, except this time at an even better venue. One of Chicago’s best mid-sized venues, the Riv Theater is an old-fashioned matinee-style movie theater converted into a concert hall, and it has the fantastic sorts of acoustics that made this great AUD recording possible.
And what a show it is. Radiohead is still touring Pablo Honey, but once they’ve returned to Chicago they bring far more energy to this material than they would either before or later. “Stop Whispering” is a monstrous performance (the band is egged on by the fact that the audience is singing along with it en masse), “Yes I Am” is given one of its few read-throughs, and “Thinking About You” is brought out for one its comparative rare early acoustic performances. It all ends with a unique rarity as Thom duets with the opening act (Tanya Donnelly, of the now-forgotten indie-pop band Belly) on “Untogether.”
