I hear this sound in songs by RadioHead and also in Classical music too. I believe this is called, "Chromatic Harmony?" To me, it's an amazing sound, only I can't find anything describing the guitar theory behind it.Gord -- Arlington Heights, Illinois. USAA: Chromatic alterations of diatonic chords form new chords that will generally not exist within one diatonic key center. This sound is very interesting and although it could be thought of in a few different ways, a good all-inclusive description of it can be, "Chromatic Harmony." This effect involves movements with the chords of a piece where the chords may be almost unrecognizable. The chords create half and whole-step movements throughout all parts of their voicings at various times through a progression. When Chromatic Harmony is put to use, we wind-up with some pretty cool sounding open-voiced chords on the guitar. Whether we're working with triads, with sevenths or extended chords, this technique can develop chord progressions with very cryptic sounding harmonies. In the video I break down how to get into using the idea of Chromatic Harmony from basic chords you probably already know. Then, I expand upon the idea using incomplete chords. I also demo several example progressions.
